Explore Stavanger’s contemporary art scene through two of the city’s high profiled galleries.

Warmly welcome to Stavanger Art Museum, one of Norway’s finest art museum – situated in a green park by the lake Mosvannet. The museum opened to the public in 1992 but dates back to the art society Stavanger Kunstforening, established in 1865. The art collection includes many important Norwegian landscape paintings, particularly by nationally renowned artists such as Kitty Kielland and Lars Hertervig. Also worth mentioning is the permanently displayed collection of art nouveau tapestries by local artist Frida Hansen. Hansen’s works are found in art museums throughout Europe, and her impressive weaving technique as well as floral motifs are of the highest quality.

Throughout the museum’s 2,500 m2 exhibition area, you will find high-quality works of art from the permanent collection as well as temporary exhibitions of international art. Video works by the American Bill Viola are amongst the artistic treasures the museum has to offer. To accompany the art experience, the museum offers a café with both indoor and outdoor seating, and a nice book shop with beautiful art books as well as design objects.

At the art museum you will be received by a professional art historian with in-depth knowledge about the museum, its collection and current exhibitions.

The BGE Contemporary ART was first established in the spring of 2014, initially the gallery largely focused on commissioned and site specific art work, in addition to showing occasional exhibitions by in-stall artists at the gallery. In 2017 BGE Contemporary Art opened the doors to a newly built gallery space in the Stavanger city center. The new gallery space is over 600 square meters, allocated over two floors, and was designed by architect Hans-Olav Hansen in RAMP architects, a unique addition to the regions art scene.

BGE Contemporary Art is dedicated to working with a high profiled stall of artists on a project-to-project basis.

Admire parts of the NuArt exhibition. Nuart is an international contemporary street and urban festival. It is an annual festival for national and international artists who operate outside of the traditional art establishment. It is widely considered the world’s leading celebration of Street Art among its peers. Every September, a team of internationally acclaimed street artists leave their mark on the city’s walls, both indoor and out, contributing to one of Europe’s most dynamic and constantly evolving public art events. The work produced at Nuart Festival stimulates debate by challenging entrenched notions of what art is – and more importantly, what it can be.
